| The two-engine A330 and the four-engine A340 are the latest long-haul airliners from Airbus. These modern, sophisticated aircraft both offer fly-by-wire technology and a modern ‘glass’ cockpit similar to the smaller A320. The most obvious difference you’ll notice when you step into the flightdeck is the lack of a conventional control column. They’ve been replaced by ‘sidesticks’, as found in fighter jets and very similar to a PC joystick. The captain flies the aircraft with his left hand and the first officer flies with his right hand. An airliner only needs very gentle control inputs so the joystick is ideal and it is easy to fly the aircraft from either seat irrespective of whether you are right or left-handed.
